A Brief Summary of This PositionThis position is the face of Valmont in dealing with customers regarding the quality of the Valmont product.-- This position is responsible for the overseeing the quality of work at the Salem site and the execution of both internal and external inspections, internal and external audits, and creation, revision and enforcement of divisional, company, and customer procedures and specifications. In addition, this position works with vendors, customers, 3rd party auditors and personnel from various departments and locations within Valmont to identify and develop quality assurance action plans and procedures.
Essential Functions:

  • This position reports to the Operations Manager and currently has no direct or indirect reports
  • This role requires up to 10% travel (internationally/domestically), including overnight stays
  • Teams with other site leaders to hire, supervise and professionally develop QA Inspectors within the Quality Assurance Department
  • Help develop policies and procedures for inspection of various manufactured and purchased products in conjunction with Customer Requirements, Engineering, and Drafting
  • Enforce policies and procedures for inspection of various manufactured and purchased products
  • Observe operating activities throughout all product areas; making recommendations, developing action plans and following up to ensure that action plans are effectively implemented
  • Represent the Quality department on task forces committees related to continuous improvement activities
  • Conduct internal quality audit of individual departments and other division locations
  • Work closely with marketing to understand customer (internal/external) needs
  • Assist department supervisors in evaluating field problem data and develop corrective action plans to prevent reoccurrence of problems
  • Analyze/evaluate manufacturing processes to identify improvement opportunities and review new processes for possible integration into systems
  • Perform data gathering, analysis, and distribution of all quality related data
  • Assist Operations Manager in implementing and maintaining both the site and division Quality Systems, and continuous improvement activities
  • Plan and organize production schedules and capacities
  • Obtain information from Sales Managers and Engineering/Drafting team about what projects that should have priority recognition
  • Schedule and release all work to Manufacturing
  • Ensure that all routings are performed on time and accurately
  • Make sure that all CNC programs are ready for manufacturing/production
  • Perform production meetings as needed with manufacturing and purchasing
  • Analyze and control capacity requirements and verify material availability to ensure timely deliveries
  • Adjust schedules to compensate for material availability, capacity availability and customer request
  • Determine delivery dates on new orders, analyzing order requirements, capacity requirements and material availability to ensure the needs of the business are met
  • Monitor the master schedule and backlog to identify trends in workload
  • Report and measure performance to schedule, WIP edits, inventory accuracy and past-due
  • Review and resolve all MRP exceptions
  • Develop and maintain reliable sources for burning, forming, and drilling of small partsOther Important Details about the Role:
    • Aids the Operations Manager and Regional QA Manager in identifying opportunities for improvement regarding both internal and external suppliers and customers for Valley site products and processes
    • Works to identify and develop quality improvement policies and action plans based on those findings
    • Responsible for the oversight of the QA Inspectors who ensure shop floor level conformity of all product lines
    • Provide direct reports with opportunities for career development and learn new skills
    • Must be capable of distinguishing conforming and non-conforming quality
    • It is imperative that the person is capable of reading, comprehending and properly interpreting specifications (internal/external)Required Qualifications:
      • Preferred Bachelor's degree with 6+ years of relevant experience or Associate's degree with 8+ years of relevant experience or 10+ years of relevant experience
      • Leadership experience in a Quality or metal fabrication role
      • Excellent communication skills via electronic media, over the phone and in-person
      • Familiarity with typical Quality Assurance manufacturing tools such as Root Cause Analysis, 5-Why Analysis, 8D problem solving methodology, Kaizen events, Continuous Improvement, etc.
      • Must be American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certified
      • Above average understanding of NDT techniques used by Valmont such as Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), Visual Testing (VT), and X-Ray testing
      • Above average comprehension of different welding processes and techniques used at Valmont
      • Capable of using both typical MS Office Suite products and Valmont specific computer programsHighly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess:
        • Five years of combined previous leadership experience in a Quality, metal fabrication, or other manufacturing role
        • Level II certifications for MT and UT in accordance with ASNT-TC-1A rules and regulations
        • Two or four year degree in welding, business, or relatable discipline OR demonstrated equivalent OTJ training
        • Analytical and decision making skills
        • Understanding of constraint theory management and material procurement
        • Production control and scheduling experience in a heavy manufacturing environment
        • Experience with IFS and Main-Frame computer systems
