Job Description:
Overview
The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel
and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate
Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular
Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue
to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand,
predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the
science behind Earth, energy, and security.
The Biological Sciences Division (BSD) at PNNL is seeking a
Computational Scientist to contribute to research on the molecular
processes in controlling the functioning of biological and
ecological systems across spatial and temporal scales. The
candidate will design, develop and implement methods for mass
spectrometry data analysis processes into robust open-source
software. The candidate will be responsible for software
development and validation for metabolomics and proteomics data
processing from high-throughput mass spectrometry platforms and be
expected to work directly with analytical chemists and experimental
biologists in interdisciplinary teams. Proficiency in scripting
languages (Python, R) and knowledge of software engineering best
practices is expected, and experience with software
containerization and cloud native applications is highly desirable.
The candidate should have excellent communication skills with a
demonstrated interest in multi-disciplinary, collaborative
research.
Responsibilities
Work in interdisciplinary teams to design, develop, and implement
methods, processes, and systems to manage and analyze complex,
high-dimensional, and high-volume mass spectrometry data
Apply knowledge of data modeling and high-performance data
architectures to develop data handling and processing software
using industry-established software engineering principals and best
practices
Contribute to open-source scientific software to support
exploratory data analysis from complex and high-dimensional
metabolomics and proteomics datasets
Participate in educational programs for BSD staff and collaborators
to champion robust and sustainable scientific software
practices
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-
MS/MA -OR-
PhD
Preferred Qualifications:
Degree(s) in bioinformatics, cheminformatics, computational
biology, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, or related fields is
preferred.
High level proficiency in scripting languages (Python, R)
Proficient working in software development platforms (GitLab,
GitHub)
Experience with software containerization and Kubernetes
environment
Knowledge of analytical chemistry, specifically mass
spectrometry
Experience with processing and interpretation of omics data
including metabolomics and/or proteomics
Strong communications skills in an interdisciplinary
environment
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, creativity and the
ability to work with abstract concepts to develop innovative
analytical methods
