Job Description:

Job Title: Executive Director of Environmental Health & Safety
Reporting directly to the Senior Associate Vice President for Administration (SAVPA), the Executive Director of Environmental Health & Safety provides leadership and oversight for the department, ensuring compliance with safety and health regulations. The role involves strategic planning, program development, and collaboration with university stakeholders to promote a safe environment across all OSU locations.
The position oversees operational management of various functional groups, including Lab Safety, Hazardous Waste, Biological Safety, Radiation Safety, Chemical Hygiene, Occupational Safety, Environmental Resource Protection, and Fire and Life Safety. Responsibilities include staff hiring, training, evaluations, and disciplinary actions, alongside addressing key program issues and risks through strategic planning and policy development.
The Executive Director exercises significant judgment in decision-making related to university standards and safety programs, recommending best practices to minimize risk. The role contributes to broad management and operational strategies, aligning with the university's mission and the OSU Strategic Plan. The incumbent must demonstrate a commitment to safety, diversity, equity, inclusion, fiscal responsibility, and effective problem-solving to support academic, research, and administrative programs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Occupational Health, Environmental Safety and Health, or a related field.
  • Eight (8) years of experience in developing, implementing, and leading EHS programs.
  • Eight (8) years managing professional/technical staff with advanced personnel administration skills.
  • Proven leadership and collaboration skills with diverse constituencies.
  • Extensive knowledge of technical requirements, policies, and regulations in health, safety, and environmental disciplines.
  • Effective communication skills, including risk reporting and presentation to leadership.
  • Experience in fiscal management, operational management, strategic planning, and process improvement.

    Additional Requirements

  • Completion of criminal history checks and compliance with university policies for security-sensitive positions.
  • Valid driver's license and successful completion of motor vehicle history checks.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with the ability to promote multicultural competence within the university community.
